Medical Missions

Medical MissionsTwo Medical Teams…One Mission

Care for children who otherwise would never receive it.

Money raised today will help offset cost for the following two medical missions that MKI has already made a commitment to sponsor this year. Both of these medical missions are similar in that the teams of doctors are traveling into areas of the countries where children have never received medical care. From these trips, doctors provide full physicals, blood test and urine sample test to screen for more serious diseases. Both the Guatemalan team as well as the Mexican team work with local health care providers to refer children for more specialized treatments or for management of chronic diseases. And when they identify children in need of surgery that is not available in their own country, they refer them to MKI’s incoming kids program. Children as well as their families also receive much needed vitamins and hygiene products. In Tijuana, the team also provides food and clothing.

Guayaquil 2008 - April 3-12, 2008

The incredible journey of 35 people, from surgeons, nurses, translators to eager volunteers from the United States and Canada to Guayaquil, Ecuador, where we perform three heart surgeries and at least three catheterization procedures per day for six days. We are here in Guayaquil from April 3rd to the 12th, most of which will be documented by our blog and photo pages.

Guatemala Medical Mission – April 4-12, 2007

MKI is proud to be partnering up once again with our amazing pediatric team from UCLA. Dr. Angelika Rampal, one of MKI’s newest board members, will accompany Dr. Andy Madikian and a team of three other doctors, a nutrition specialist and three U.S. volunteers to set up clinic in two different locations. Upon arrival into Guatemala City, the first clinic will be held at the Centro Cristiano Church. From here, the team will travel to a remote location in the Rio Dulce area and set up a clinic for six days where children from various villages will be bussed in for medical screenings. In the past, our team has served anywhere from 1200 to 1600 children per trip.

Tijuana Medical Mission – Date to be determined

It is Mending Kid’s desire to help support the ongoing efforts of one of our very own special doctors, Dr. John Rodarte who is also former conjoined twin Josie Hull’s pediatric physician. Dr. Rodarte travels four times a year to Tijauna with a group known as Healing Hearts Across Boarders. The team consists of five doctors, a dentist, translators, a mobile lab and a pharmacy. The two-day clinic serves 600 to 700 people per weekend trip. They travel to two different locations, including Colonia Obrera, the makeshift village at the Tijuana garbage dump. For one of the team’s upcoming trips, Mending Kids will be partnering up with Our Lady of Malibu Parish to cover the necessary cost. Mending Kids will be covering the cost of the medications, the mobile lab and transportation for the medical personnel. Our Lady of Malibu also has an ongoing program where they serve the people of Colonia Obrera four times a year. This time, they will be appealing to their parishioners to volunteer as support staff to the medical team as well
