Recently, six children traveled more than six hours from Musoma, Tanzania, near the Serengeti, to Bugando Medical Center for one chance to be seen by our volunteer team.
 
They came hoping they would qualify for surgery.
 
For all, even a simple $12 X-ray needed to confirm their diagnosis was out of reach.
 
The surgeries they received were free.
 
The medications they needed afterward were not.
 
So we made sure they had those too.
 
Every year, we meet parents who travel incredible distances, often sacrificing everything they have, for the chance that their child might receive life-changing surgery. Their journey doesn't begin in the operating room. It begins with finding transportation, paying for a place to sleep, affording an X-ray, or simply making it to the hospital.
 
That's what Hike2Mend is about.
 
Our walk honors the extraordinary journey families undertake to access surgical care, and helps ensure more children receive the treatment they deserve.
