INDIVIDUAL SURGICAL CARE

Mending Kids believes in miracles and how playing a small role in curing a child of their sickness or disability results in a ripple effect that encourages, strengthens, and empowers their family and community.

Berhanu, a young boy from Ethiopia suffering from crippling scoliosis, grows 6 inches with surgery and stands tall!

US Surgical Care

In its early days, Mending Kids flew children from around the world to Los Angeles for surgeries at local major hospitals. As our overseas missions expanded across the globe allowing children to receive quality surgical care in their home countries, the Individual Surgical Care: US program evolved. Today, it is reserved for children with the most complex surgical needs that may require multiple surgeries and/or extended recovery periods. A child mended through this program is transported to southern California where they receive care from:

Shriners Hospital

All care needed from a volunteer medical team

A Host Family who provides accommodations, transport, care and anything else needed during their stay

International Surgical Care

Partnerships with prominent hospitals around the world allow Mending Kids to provide the Individual Surgical Care: International program to children in countries where we do not send surgical missions. When a child in need of surgery is identified, Mending Kids sponsors them to get the surgery in a neighboring country at one of our trusted partner hospitals.

In most cases, the cost of sending a child and a family member to a nearby country to receive care, including the surgical procedure, transportation, housing, and food is less than the cost of bringing the child to the US alone to receive surgical care. And for most patients, a shorter journey to a closer hospital is much-preferred. In 2015, the Individual Surgical Care: International program helped 37 children receive safe and timely surgical care.
