the Need

Mauritius has only one pediatric cardiologist working in a public hospital—Dr. Ramdhany. Families who can manage the cost often travel abroad for treatment, but many simply can’t, leaving children to wait with conditions that worsen over time. With no pediatric cardiac surgery program in place, the country depends on visiting international teams. Mending Kids is one of the few nonprofits providing this critical support. By partnering with Dr. Ramdhany, we’re helping to build sustainable local capacity so that more children can access life-saving care, without having to leave home.

Progress and Vision

With strong government backing and leadership from Dr. Sunil Gunness, who heads the Trust Fund for Specialised Medical Care – Cardiac Centre at SSRN Hospital, this mission is set to become an annual program under Mending Kids.
The long-term goal is to support Dr. Sachin Ramdhany in increasing both the complexity and number of pediatric cardiac procedures that can be safely and independently performed by the local team.

This initiative builds on the successful model first established by Mending Kids at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Tanzania. Since its launch in 2015, that program has saved thousands of lives and is now evolving into East Africa’s first pediatric cardiac hub. Mauritius has the potential to follow a similar path—transforming from a recipient to a provider of care across the region.
