Progress and Goals

During our April 2022 cath mission, we screened 28 patients and did 12 cath procedures ranging from aortic valve dilation, pulmonary valve dilation PDA closure by device, ASD closure by device and stenting of coarctation of the aorta, and even of a narrowed superior vena cave.

The local medical team's biggest challenge is having anesthesiologist available. There is only one for the cardiac unit and she is in training. They are also in desperate need of perfusion staffing and experience.
Dr. Womack believes that working as a team, they will be able to do more, much sooner and in an independent way.
The local surgeons would benefit from the right kind of mentoring in their own hospital. The ability for the local team to do cath is finally proven, they still need a lot of development and training. They are very motivated and interest in building the program. According to Dr. Maria Eugenia Prado, Director of the Cardiology Department, the hospital administration and Director is very supportive of the cardiac department and providing the necessary for the mission as long as they are available in-country.
